Join WDIV Sportscaster Bernie Smilovitz and his friends on September 13, 2010 for a day on links, supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. This years goal is to raise $100,000 providing 300,000 meals to feed our hungry neighbors. There is a 10am shotgun start, 18-holes with cart, breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks on the course. After a day on the course there will be an open bar, hors d’ oeuvres, and a raffle with great prizes. Sponsorships are available.

I am a college student who recently had a friend hit by a car while she was riding her bike because the woman behind the wheel was distracted by her phone. I have taken this incident which impacted my life on a profound level, and partnered with a non-profit organization that deals with the educational aspect of the affects and dangers of texting or talking while driving. The charity tournament will be held at Braemar Country Club–a private country club in Los Angeles, CA–and all the proceeds will be going to this non-profit organization to continue educating the masses. |

| The first annual Dennis Grindstaff Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held on July 10, 2010 at the Wolf Creek Golf Course in Bastain, VA. Proceeds will benefit a Bland County high school graduating senior that plans to become a teacher. Prizes include a charter fishing trip that includes three days and two nights on the Chesapeake Bay/Rappahannock River (valued at $1,800), electronics, gift certificates, and signed sports memorabilia. The first and second place teams will also receive a cash prize, along with prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin There will be a meal provided for participants and adult beverages available to purchase. The tournament is a captain’s choice/shotgun start starting at 1 p.m., including 18 holes of golf and cart rental. The entry fee will be $60 per person and checks should be made to the D. B. Grindstaff Memorial Scholarship Fund and mailed to Carrie Harwood, 1021 Montgomery Street, Blacksb urg, VA 24060. | For fifteen years we have been humbled by the kindness and generosity of individuals and businesses alike, who understand the importance of supporting the “The John L. McGuirk Memorial Golf Tournament”. Over $100,000 has been raised to benefit medical research and treatment of high-risk pregnancies at Massachusetts General Hospital Vincent Service and the North Shore Cancer Center’s Wellness Fund, which helps to counsel and support children of families who are coping with the ravages of cancer.
With the tough economic times, everyone’s dollar is stretched. However, please remember that there are no economic boundaries for cancer or high-risk pregnancies. They can strike anyone at any time, without warning. Cancer is an insidious disease that taxes families in countless ways; physically, financially, emotionally. There is no more hopeless feeling than watching someone that you love struggle with this singularly devastating illness. This is why once a year we gather in solidarity to help others, while spending an enjoyable afternoon on the links. |
