| The Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund The Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund was established on September 8, 1969 to honor the memory of 1st Lieutenant Michael P. Quinn, USMC. 1st Lieutenant Quinn was the Executive Officer, Company H, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Mike Quinn was raised in Charlestown, and graduated from the Boston Latin School. He was a linebacker on the football team and a defenseman on the hockey team, being named All-City, 1963-1964 in both sports. Mike Quinn entered Holy Cross on a four year scholarship in September 1964. He met with success in both football and hockey, being named co-captain of the hockey team his senior year. Mike Quinn received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Cross on May 29, 1968. He was also commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on that same day. Second Lieutenant Quinn reported to The Basic School at Quantico, VA. He distinguished himself again as he graduated first in his Basic School class on November 13, 1968. On August 29, 1969, while leading a patrol twenty-eight miles south of DaNang, Republic of Viet Nam, 1st Lieutenant Quinn was killed while conducting combat operations. For his actions, 1st Lieutenant Quinn was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Since its establishment on September 8, 1969, the 1st Lieutenant Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund has awarded thousands of dollars to deserving young men and women of Charlestown so that may pursue their goal of obtaining a college degree. The recipient of this year’s scholarship in the amount of $7500.00 is Taylor Mahoney. Taylor is a 2011 graduate of the Boston Latin School and will be a freshman at Simmons College in Boston, MA.
