Women golfers and their friends are invited to participate in a one-of-a-kind event The Home for Little Wanderers’ annual Home in One Women’s Golf Tournament  to benefit at-risk children and families. The Tournament will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at The International  one of the nation’s premier golf destinations  159 Ballville Road, Bolton, MA.

“Home in One is unique, one-of-a-kind golf fundraiser because it provides guests with an opportunity to choose between playing 18 holes, taking a ‘getting started’ golf lesson or being pampered at the spa,” said Clemmie Cash, a Board Member of The Home and Chair of the golf tournament committee. “The event encourages women to invite their friends and co-workers for a day out of the office, or without the kids, to support a good cause. Participants will have fun while raising money to support programs and services that are even more critical for children at risk and their families in these difficult times.”

The Home for Little Wanderers is the nation’s oldest and one of New England’s largest, private, non-profit child and family service agencies, serving more than 10,000 children at risk and their families from throughout the state each year. Many who come to The Home have had devastating experiences with abuse and neglect and struggle with emotional and behavioral issues.

The Aims: Skills training given to persons with multiple disabilities and persons less fortunate at no cost.
The Visions: To teach and empower persons with a skill that could possabilty get them employment in the open labour market, or allow them to open and manage a small bussines from home to generate an income. Skills Training courses offered from DSSD at no cost are:
Basic Computer & Internet
Sewing,
Woodcraft,
Recycling,
Making Biltong,
Arts & Crafts.
The organization also has a work creation department which has 22 prsons with multiple disabilities employed, they manage and run the department and recieve an income each month depending on the income genertaed within the department, work is contracted to the department from Industry Bussineses, Work such as Packaging, Labelling, Sewing, Recycling.
The orhanisation relys on sponsors to assit with projects and fundraising events towards funding for operational cost and project consumables.
The Charity Golf Challenge is an annual event that is hosted by DSSD. This year we managed to get all the prizes sponsored very early, but the golf players we are still stagering with. We are really in need of players at this time.

At just 24 years of age, she is basically homebound except for her doctor visits. She has had to quit college and is unable to hold a job. None of her many medications or treatments is covered by insurance. Every cost is out of pocket. All funds will go to help cover her medical expenses.

The foundation plans to award at least a couple full or partial scholarships in January 2010. Caddy For A Cure offers the public the opportunity to experience a day “inside-the-ropes” at a PGA TOUR venue, caddying for a PGA TOUR player—with 100% of the proceeds going to charity. It’s a chance to walk the greatest courses in the nation, next to the greatest players and names in the world of golf, at a sanctioned PGA TOUR event. Caddying is an opportunity to gain insight into professional golf and its players that is unlike any other means. It’s a priceless opportunity to develop a relationship with one of the top players in the world while standing next to them as they hit shot after incredible shot.

The Caddy For A Cure experiences are sold through a variety of methods, each reaching a diverse and immensely large audience. Since its inception and as one of its primary selling methods, Caddy For A Cure has utilized eBay’s online auction platform with its charity-arm, MissionFish.org. Through eBay’s search engine, the Caddy For A Cure auctions have the potential to reach a worldwide audience of billions. Caddy For A Cure has also partnered with many public charity events in high-end private auctions, creating a winning opportunity for many and reaching audiences that are passionate about supporting their cause. Another sales method that Caddy For A Cure has developed is a Corporate Incentive Program. The opportunity to have the day of your golf life by caddying for one of the world’s best golfers at an official PGA TOUR tournament venue is easy with Caddy For A Cure. Here’s how it works:

1. The best way to plan for your participation is to stay informed about which players are available at which PGA TOUR events. You can do this by signing up for our newsletters at Newsletter Sign-Up.

2. Once you know for whom and where you’d like to caddy, there are a couple of ways to proceed:

a) Click on the live auction link for that player from the Caddy For A Cure Home Page. This will take you to the auction in the eBay Caddy For A Cure Store where you can either:

i.) Buy It Now at the price listed; or

ii.) Make Your Best Offer.

b) You can also call or email us directly if you don’t see what you want or if you have questions at Contact Us.

3. Once you’ve purchased or won the caddy auction, here’s what you can expect:

a) We will contact you confirming that you won the auction. We will then follow-up with thorough details about the day such as what you’ll wear, tickets and parking for the event, when-where-who you’ll meet at the course, pictures, etc.

b) You will be asked to consent to a Terms & Conditions Agreement that covers information like ‘what-ifs’ and mutual liability issues (Terms & Conditions Agreement).

The #3 ranked player in the world, Paul Casey, joined Caddy For A Cure last week at Tiger Wood’s AT&T National held at the Congressional Country Club. Bethesda area resident Fred Keel become our second “three peat” participant taking advantage of this fantastic opportunity and historic venue. Fred could not have been more excited to carry the bag for Paul who is hands-down one of the nicest and most personable players on the planet .

Fred quickly found out how Paul has become the 3rd best player in the entire world. Watching Paul hit shot after shot with such perfection, Fred was amazed at the skills of this great guy. Paul’s regular caddy, Craig Connelly, was also along to show Fred how it is done, but for this seasoned Caddy For A Cure caddy, not much help was needed!

Once again, another golf-dream came true for our participant by being able to walk along the famed fairways of Congressional Country Club, site of so many historic events in golf, with one of the best players in the world on a gorgeous day.  But the dreams that Caddy For A Cure helps come true are not only for our participants, but for the many lives we are able to help who are far less fortunate.

Paul Casey is a super cool guy and a true joy in the world of golf and life. Without hesitation he eagerly stepped in to help out when KJ Choi had to change his plans with us at this event. Paul so believes in helping others that he wants to help again and again.  Despite the change with KJ, Fred Keel readily admitted that this was one terrific experience indeed.

Also joining us for a great time at Congressional was Dennis McGlone from Pittsburgh. McGlone had his golf-day of a lifetime spending it inside the ropes with Hunter Mahan. Could it have been “Caddy For A Cure Karma” going as Hunter battled Tiger down to the wire for the victory at Congressional?  We humbly like to think that this is simply yet again good things happening to those who do good for others.

For those of you who have never been inside the action at one of the biggest events in sport, it is a rush of energy like you have never experienced. Here, Dennis gets a sense first-hand of how good these guys really are, performing on the most difficult golf courses in front of thousands of fans in the heat of competition.

Hunter Mahan and his caddy, John Wood, could not have been nicer nor made a better day for Dennis McGlone. As hard as Dennis worked for Hunter, he still went home with a smile as big as can be knowing that he made a difference in so many people’s lives.

FOCUS ON FANCONI

This month’s featured child comes from a land “down under.” Yes, Fanconi anemia knows no boundaries and can strike any where in the world and this is one Aussie child fighting the good fight. Jasper Miles is his name and it was quite touching when his father Paul, reached out to us to help spread the word.

Jasper was diagnosed on February 1st 2007 with the rare genetic condition of Fanconi Anemia. Here is a bit of background on the disease: · FA is one of several deadly inherited anemias. · FA patients may have a variety of noticeable birth defects. In Jasper’s case, these include – Low birth weight, failure to thrive, IUGR, cordy, and his “dodgy” thumb. · FA patients experience a high incidence of leukemia (18%-20%). · FA patients have a much higher incidence of cancer than the general population. It is a matter of when, not if, he needs a bone marrow transplant.

This is not something you want to have happen to anyone, but his parents would not change their little angel-boy for anything! They intend to show him every day how much they love him and fill his life with wondrous things – just like they planned to prior to his diagnosis.

Update:  We received credible information about how this works.

Legally you can only deduct the portion of the entrance fee which exceeds the normal cost of the round at that course. So, if you pay $100 to play in a charity event on a Monday, and that course usually charges $50 for a round of golf and $15 for the cart, you can only deduct the $35 difference. You can also deduct the cost of Mulligans and such, but not the cost of raffle tickets. Even then, it’s a tax deduction, not a tax credit.

Tell us More: The National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin is teaming up with Westmoor Country Club and Crest Cadillac to announce the return of the Cadillac Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday, August 3, 2009.

The Cadillac Invitational held at the newly renovated Westmoor Country Club is one link in the nationwide series of 40 amateur tournaments being held across the country. The tournament is open to all amateur golfers with two divisions of play, Competitive and Non-Competitive.

The winning “Competitive Division” foursome and second-place qualifiers will be invited to compete in the Cadillac Invitational National Finals at Florida’s famed TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verda Beach. Eligible teams in the Competitive Division consist of four amateur players whose USGA Handicap Indexes total 43.0 or more, and only one golfer on each team may have a Handicap Index of 8.0 or less.

Golfers participating in the “Non-Competitive” Division will compete for local prizes and all skill levels are invited! Foursomes, twosomes, and individual golfers are welcome in the afternoon shotgun and scramble event.

The foursome team entry fee is $1,600 for the Competitive Division or $1,400 for the Non-Competitive Division, a portion of which is tax deductible, and helps support the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin. Team entry fees include premium golf gift bags, driving range access, lunch, on-course hospitality, awards reception and dinner, and of course, a great round of golf at Westmoor Country Club!

For every dollar contributed, 84 cents is donated to patient programs and services available to all affected by organ donation, diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease. In addition, the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin provides public and professional education and funds life saving research.

The National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin was founded forty years ago by a group of physicians and family members. It is dedicated to the prevention of kidney and urinary tract disease, improving the health and well-being of patients and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.

The Jimmy Fund started in 1948 when the Variety Club of New England (now the Variety Children’s Charity of New England) and the Boston Braves baseball team joined forces to help a 12-year-old cancer patient dubbed “Jimmy.” On a national radio broadcast, millions heard the boy visit with his heroes from the Braves as they stood by his hospital bed. Contributions poured in from people everywhere, launching an effort that continues to bring hope to thousands of children and adults facing cancer throughout the world.

Milestones in the history of the Jimmy Fund

1948

The Jimmy Fund is launched with the help of the Variety Club of New England (now the Variety Children’s Charity of New England). The club organizes a radio broadcast from the bedside of a young cancer patient dubbed Jimmy as he is visited by members of the Boston Braves baseball team. Contributions pour in to buy Jimmy a television set so he can watch the Braves play.

1949

The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charity Theater Program begins.

1953

Boston Red Sox owners Tom and Jean Yawkey adopt the Jimmy Fund as the team’s official charity when the Braves move to Milwaukee. The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association also names the Jimmy Fund as its official charity.

1967

The 1967 Boston Red Sox “Impossible Dream Team” votes to give the Jimmy Fund a share of its winnings from the World Series.

1977

The first Jimmy Fund council, the Jimmy Fund Council of Greater Boston, is established. Learn more

1980

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, the cross-state bicycle ride that has grown into the Jimmy Fund’s single largest fundraising event, is founded.

1983

The first annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl® ice cream extravaganza is held on the Boston Common. Jimmy Fund Golf is officially organized.

1989

The Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk begins with help from Boston Marathon organizers, the Boston Athletic Association.

1991

Stop & Shop teams up with the Boston Red Sox to raise $1 million through the Triple Winner Game, a scratch card game that Stop & Shop customers can play by contributing $1 to the Jimmy Fund.

1998

The Jimmy Fund celebrates 50 years of progress in the fight against cancer. Just in time for the celebration, Einar Gustafson, the original “Jimmy,” who gave the charity its name, returns to Dana-Farber. A symbol of hope for thousands of children and adults in their fight against cancer, “Jimmy” attended numerous events, becoming a faithful supporter of the Jimmy Fund until his death at age 65 in January 2001.

2000

Joining Stop & Shop in supporting the Jimmy Fund through cause marketing are Jiffy Lube (1997), Taco Bell (1999), Dunkin’ Donuts (1999), Hyundai Motor America (2000), and Burger King Restaurants (2000).

2002

The inaugural WEEI Jimmy Fund Radiothon raises more than $325,000. In 2003, NESN joins the event and turns it into a radio-telethon.

2005

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge leads the nation in dollars raised by an athletic fundraising event by presenting $23 million to the Jimmy Fund.

2008

The 7th annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon reaches new heights when people from all 50 states and around the world pledge more than $4.8 million. The 29th annual Pan Massachusetts Challenge generates $35 million in support of cancer research and care at Dana-Farber, more than twice the amount ever raised for a charity by an athletic fundraising event in the country.
